PUPdate!

Quest (now Milo) arrived home on May 20th. He has settled in very well with his new family! We're all so happy to see him home safe and sound!

Milo and his new brother Diesel:

Also - more good news, an update from Kathleen who went down to Phoenix to pick up her sweet girl Velma. She also picked up a cat for someone in Edmonton, Gracie, a senior cat with liver issues who may not have many years left, but lots of love! Seems like lots of people have soft spots for the senior pets - good on 'em!

From Kathleen:
"Just got into the office but wanted to let you know that we all made it back safe and sound. Velma and Gracie were little angels and did not make a peep on the plane. Velma was truly a hit at the airport. Al stood back and just rolled his eyes, it was hilarious. Some lady in line for Phoenix security gave me her card, she has a radio talk show on rescued animals. It is somewhere in the US but I am going to send her an email. Velma and Abby are going to be great friends, can’t forget Louis(my cat). They all seemed to really take to Velma. Velma spent a long time last night walking around the island in my kitchen. She is hilarious, due to her ear I think she walks in circles all the time. She ate and drank and pooped and peed. I am going home at lunch to check on her.
You will all have to come over for a visit.
Kathleen"

It's not over yet!

Just a quick note to let my multitude of followers know that the Dogtown blog isn't QUITE finished. Lauren's new pup arrives in Calgary on Saturday and Kathleen has also decided to adopt Velma from Old Friends and is picking her up in Arizona at the end of the month - so I'll be providing updates as they unfold.

I also have a bunch of pictures of Zion National Park that are still on the camera which Rob took with him on his business trip, so I'll have to post them when he gets back. If he deleted them there will be blood, as I had to drive the Aveo down a steep valley on switchbacks and through the longest tunnel ever created to get them...

Last day in Dogtown!

:(

I could spend a month here without getting bored. Who can complain about spending all day with dogs? Well, I suppose if you're a cat person you could complain, but then why the Hell would you be at Dogtown?

Today was another day spent at the Lodges. I took extra time with my favourites, Batgirl, Screech, and Gramps. Celine, who we took on a sleepover, has been moved to the Lodges so I got to say goodbye to her as well.

Screech
was very sad to say goodbye but we had a nice chat, he and I.

I'll be back next year for sure, but I do hope I don't see any of these dogs again - they all deserve forever homes.

You might be a redneck if...

...you have a sunburn on the back of your neck. How's the snow in Calgary?

Today was another day spent at the Lodges - it's been nice having a few days at the same place as we have gotten a rhythm and we mesh with the staff there. It is a bit of a gong show as we have to sign up in the morning and the afternoon to go to where we would like, and if someone gets there before us we might not be able to get our choice - luckily for us we are all familiar with rescue and the work involved so the staff are very happy to see us...good to know we're not like some of the useless tits we've come across...

It's going to be hard to leave right when we're fitting in, but we're already planning another trip next year.

I spent some time with the lovely Tina Louise today:

And tonight we have Quest, Lauren's puppy, for an overnight!!

I have sand in places I didn't know existed...

...such is the life in a desert, I suppose.

Kathleen and Coreen left for Vegas yesterday, and Hailey, Dallas, and Gillian left today. It's down to Loralee, Lauren, and I...and we're off to Vegas on Thursday to celebrate Lauren's birthday!

Today was another great day, and the weather cooperated. Hot, sunny, and calm. The three of us went back to the Lodges this morning, I went to Deja while Lauren and Loralee went to Angel's. I spent the morning walking dogs, some of which were real characters. The dogs in these areas are some of the tougher cases. I could spend every day there, I like the misunderstood mutts.

Lauren is going to adopt a puppy from here, Quest. We took his sister, Adventure, on an outing today. OMG are these pups cute! Purebred pit bulls, they were an owner surrender.

We brought another dog back for an overnight tonight, Celine. She is a pittie-lab cross, who was rescued after Katrina as a puppy. She was adopted, and then a few months later Best Friends got a call that she was running at large in Miami. So she is back at the sanctuary. She is very dog reactive and gets extremely over stimulated at the sanctuary so it was requested we take her for an overnight. She's much different outside the sanctuary. She's still dog reactive but after a quick half hour walk she is very calm and is just chilling out on the floor.

A somber start...

I got some very bad news this morning, so I would like to take a moment to remember Zeke, a wonderful young dog who charmed everyone he met in his short life...his death comes as a shock and I feel horrible for his foster parents - losing a foster dog is like losing one of your own, and for it to happen so suddenly is devastating. Zeke - please say hi to Rica, Pacino, and Jersey for me and have fun chasing each other on the Rainbow Bridge until we can all see you again. You are deeply missed.

Yesterday in Dogtown was a great day, though the wind brought a chill to the air that promised snow...we didn't get the snow but it sure felt like it would hit any minute. Lauren and I were assigned to the Clubhouse where we got to meet Ellen and Lucas, 2 of the Vicktory Dogs. Ellen was likely used as either a bait dog or for forced breeding, but she is a sweetheart who just wants love and affection:

Lucas was the prize fighter/stud. Looking at him I couldn't imagine him hurting a fly. He's more likely to lick you to death. They are proof all dogs can be rehabilitated even though a judge's mandate still deems them dangerous.

We spent the morning walking dogs at the Clubhouse and worked a bit with a couple of the shy dogs.

The afternoon was a bit more like work as we moved to the Lodges in the old part of Dogtown. I helped sweep out kennels and change water, and also with the afternoon feeding. I met Ray, another of the Vicktory dogs, and did see where Georgia stays but she is recovering from a medical procedure. Sadly I can't interact with the Vicktory dogs as they are "red collar" dogs, but this is more a precautionary measure than a testament to their real temperaments. They are very sweet dogs, as all pit bulls are.
I enjoyed the work in the Lodges and I hope to go back there today for more of a chance to interact with the dogs there. Most of them are pittie mixes and tougher cases though they are all wonderful dogs.
Last night we brought back our first sleepover dog: Aspen, an 11 year old, three legged retriever cross being treated for heartworm. Aspen's signature pose is on his back waiting for belly rubs.

Morning has broken...

6:25AM. The rest of the crew won't be up for a half hour or so, but being used to getting up at 5:30 I decided to take advantage of the time and mention a few highlights from yesterday that I missed.

We came here to work with dogs, so our base for the next few days is Dogtown. We did get a chance to stop in at Cat World yesterday, though, and visit some of the cats with leukemia. I tell you, if I were a cat, there are far worse places to be than Cat World!

We also had a chance to meet our first resident of Dogtown, Boomer!

He really liked Loralee:

And, when we went to Dogtown HQ to sign in for our first volunteer session, we were greeted by Rollie, who explained to Coreen in great detail where the treat jar was kept.

After our volunteer session, Loralee and I took the opportunity to explore a cave we spotted from the road.

Our dining place of choice last night was Houston's Trail's End, where Lauren and I enjoyed the delicious vegetarian quesadillas while the rest of the crew went with artery clogging chicken-fried-chicken and steak. It was all washed down by an ice cold beer:

Put THAT in your blog and smoke it!

I can't even begin to describe how amazingly beautiful this area is. It's like nothing I've ever seen before, and I live in the Rocky Mountains. The energy here is fantastic. It's like I've come home after a 31 year absence.

It's day 2 of our adventure and we've certainly made the most of our time. Today was our first day at the sanctuary but in the interest of chronologicality, I'll start where I left off in my last post.

Where to eat in Kanab? The Rocking V. Full stop. The food is, for lack of a better word, superb. And the staff are very happy to have you, even if you're an obnoxiously loud and drunk group of Canadians.

And really the biggest selling point for us was that the restaurant is stumbling distance from our motel. And we did stumble. But I digress.

This morning we finally had our introduction to the sanctuary. I've read other reviews, I knew we were in for a treat, but nothing can prepare you for this...it's heaven for animals and the people who love them. We got a tour of the sanctuary and briefly saw all the different areas, with quick stops in Dogtown and Cat World. Unfortunately we can't interact with the horses or the pigs since we're from out of the country, but if we had the time or inclination to spend 2 weeks here beforehand, we could have done a bit more. Not that I'm complaining, today was amazing. And again I can't stress enough how beautiful it is here.

After the tour and volunteer orientation, we had some time so we went back to a place we stopped on the tour. Angels Rest is a peaceful, serene place created to memorialize beloved pets and sanctuary animals who have passed over the Rainbow Bridge. I think we all shed a tear or several.

The following is a video portraying some of the 500+ wind chimes at Angel's Rest. What was amazing was when we stopped there, there was no wind. We were so disappointed because we were told the chimes were an experience. And what an experience. Every time one of us passed a "tree", the wind would blow and the chimes would sound. It was like a hundred wagging tails, welcoming us to the sanctuary.

After our stop at the cemetery and lunch, we had an opportunity to participate in puppy socialization. I know, you're thinking, Geeze, who would want to do that?? But we decided we were there to help and so we spent some time playing with a group of pups. I personally decided Triumph is a great candidate for adoption:

Lauren liked Sony:

There is so much more to tell you and show you from this day alone. But I've run out of time and a wine glass has been placed in front of me. More tomorrow.
