Yesterday in Dogtown was a great day, though the wind brought a chill to the air that promised snow...we didn't get the snow but it sure felt like it would hit any minute. Lauren and I were assigned to the Clubhouse where we got to meet Ellen and Lucas, 2 of the Vicktory Dogs. Ellen was likely used as either a bait dog or for forced breeding, but she is a sweetheart who just wants love and affection:
Lucas was the prize fighter/stud. Looking at him I couldn't imagine him hurting a fly. He's more likely to lick you to death. They are proof all dogs can be rehabilitated even though a judge's mandate still deems them dangerous.
We spent the morning walking dogs at the Clubhouse and worked a bit with a couple of the shy dogs.

The afternoon was a bit more like work as we moved to the Lodges in the old part of Dogtown. I helped sweep out kennels and change water, and also with the afternoon feeding. I met Ray, another of the Vicktory dogs, and did see where Georgia stays but she is recovering from a medical procedure. Sadly I can't interact with the Vicktory dogs as they are "red collar" dogs, but this is more a precautionary measure than a testament to their real temperaments. They are very sweet dogs, as all pit bulls are.
I enjoyed the work in the Lodges and I hope to go back there today for more of a chance to interact with the dogs there. Most of them are pittie mixes and tougher cases though they are all wonderful dogs.
Last night we brought back our first sleepover dog: Aspen, an 11 year old, three legged retriever cross being treated for heartworm. Aspen's signature pose is on his back waiting for belly rubs.

Why do I get the feeling that Lor is coming back with a 3-legged dog? LOL
ReplyDeleteI would give almost anything to work with the Victory Dogs. Their story is so horrifying and just to see them over-coming that horror would be so uplifting. You're so lucky.
I don't yet know what happened with Zeke, but I'm very sorry about his passing. Please send my condolences.
